The Art of Scrying

Rate this book
A fake ancient urn.
A suitor with a lot of secrets.
Can Fortuna bring the truth into focus before her world cracks?

When Fortuna finally accepts one of Martin Salvi’s persistent invitations to have dinner at his enormous mansion on the edge of town, she’s still not sure she can trust him. Sure, he’s handsome and yes, he had lots of reasons for ghosting her earlier this year, but she can’t help but feel the handsome greyhound track manager’s still hiding something from her. Something big.

As the evening goes on, Fortuna recognizes Martin’s prized ancient urn on display just inside the lanai is a fake—and she’s shocked when he's barely fazed by the news. Rather than call the police, Martin convinces her they can unravel the mystery of the fake urn together...

But was Martin Salvi’s urn theft even real? Or did he just create an elaborate ruse to spend time with her?

Good and bad

The writing style is great and has kept me in the series. By the fourth book we should see progress... Progress in character development, abilities and in purpose. There was very little to be had. The first book was awesome in that we accept the main characters to be flawed. A bit disappointing in that the book is setup to be a paranormal series but it could so easily not be and would probably be a better series to this point if she wasn't. The fact she is suppose to be a witch and does nothing but talk to what one ghost... Makes our main character appear weak. She is weak. She is still incredibly judgemental. Still hypocritical. Still self absorbed. The author knows this as she writes it into her book (comments from other characters) so she is fully aware the reader will have a hard time with the main character. Yet by end of book four it is still an issue. Pepper even talked to Fortuna about some of this, Fortuna acknowledged it, and yet the final paragraphs she is still an angry, weak, hypocritical nobody. No clue what Martin sees in her as none of her good qualities are written into any scene they share. It makes no sense why he would give her the time if day. I will try book 5... Growth is hinted at coming in book 4... But like book 3 I will probably fast forward through her ridiculous, hypocritical temper tantrums until she starts owning something... Anything

This is book four of the Mystic’s End Mysteries and continues the story of Fortuna Delphi and the art shop and gallery she has set up when she moved to Mystic’s End. She moved there hoping to find out the identity of her real parents, after she had been left in the town as a foundling and no clues as to her real identity. She has two men who have been after her, Martin Salvi, the owner of the large complex outside of town and the greyhound track where she rescued her dog Gideon from. The other is Gabe, the deputy police chief and grandson of Miss Bessie, who has kept her magically abilities secret from everyone and was actually the town mystic, something she passed onto Fortuna with a slap. In this book we finally get to learn more about what this means at long last.

Fortuna has been keeping her head buried in the sand about most of her issues and has been ignoring the message in the book that mysteriously came out of the ground for her, and also Miss Bessie who has constantly told her she must practise her scrying, as the book also instructed her! Gabe and Pepper went out on a secret date, but this finally resolved their relationship and there is nothing romantic between them anymore. Miss Bessie still keeps telling Fortuna that she will marry Gabe, but Fortuna has sworn off any relationships at the moment. Martin tries to get her attention again and finally reveals a little about himself, by inviting her to a meal at his mansion. Whilst there Fortuna spots what should have been a very valuable urn, but finds out it is a fake.

Martin asks her to investigate what happened to the real urn and who could have taken it and when, since he only bought it a few months before. This means she will now be seeing him daily, but she also brings in Pepper and her new love interest, police officer Ollie, Gabe’s best friend and also a computer expert. Something they need as the investigation continues, not that this makes Martin too happy! Whilst doing this investigation, she finally finds out some uncomfortable home truths about Martin’s family and their business methods, as well as more about his bodyguard Jeeves. More people in the town now know she is a witch, whether that be just as a fortune teller, or as an actual mystic, coming from a long line of mystics going back far into the town’s true history. She is now the last in the line and what this will mean for her is unknown, but there are those who will want her dead, if they discover her true identity. Shame she chose a surname for herself that is deeply linked to the town’s past.

The hunt for the stolen urn, which may turn out to never have even been stolen and a large number of surprises in Martin’s home, raise more questions for Fortuna than real answers. Finally getting the story of the town’s proper founders, a group of female witches and the disappearances of many of their descendants in recent years, leads to the fact that these witches have been trapped in bottles and most of them haven’t been found and no one, not even Miss Bessie, has been able to open the three that have been found, out of about twenty six. There is much more than the case of a stolen urn for Fortuna to worry about in this book. Finally, more is revealed about the town’s past, the importance of being the town mystic and also more about Martin and those who work for him. This is a great book to tie together a lot of what readers will have discovered in the previous books and is getting us closer to seeing what role Fortuna will have in the town. I can’t wait for what’s next! I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

In a similar fashion as the paranormal circus stories, at the heart of the Mystics End tales are the journeys of truth and self discovery.

It is easy to be angry or frustrated with others at the secrets they hold and hide - and also easy to justify your own secrets. Sometimes greed, power or personal gain lie behind the secrets.

For Martin, secrets about his family that he holds are apparently mire for the protection of folks in his circle with personal and paranormal connections

Fortuna has a great deal of anger and frustration at his hidden secrets, but mostly does not share some of the ones she holds about herself, and about Miss Bessie, Gabe’s gran.

Part of her reticence may be about not wanting to hurt him - both Bessie and Fortuna seem to want to shield him from that. Part of their reticence lies in their shared understanding Gabe would want to help, snd as a male without hereditary powers, there may well be nothing he could do - and his impulsive protective nature could destroy not only him, but jeopardize the efforts to find resolution for the trapped women’s souls in the town

Does her greater anger at Martin mean a greater attachment to him for Fortuna?

The writings of a mystical book urge Fortuna to scry.

Perhaps in the next book she might do so, and perhaps a resolution to the imprisonments might be reached.

Or perhaps the real battles have yet to begin

Strong, proud women, annoying and interfering alpha males who are somehow endearing, phenomenal familiars, and frustrating romance mixed with epic drama!

Quite a surprising collection For what I expected to be a simple psychic witch in a small town cozy series.

Love it when I find even more inside of a book than I hoped for!

Secrets, Answers, and More Questions

The storyline for this series and the characters are so rich and complex that I feel like giving any amount of detail about what actually happens in the story would be apt to confuse someone new to the series… and unnecessary for anyone who already knows and loves the series. Let me say right at the start that this series is very well written with layers of complexity that we don't typically see in a paranormal cozy mystery series. You shouldn't start with this book, or you may get confused as each book does build on the last. Start at the beginning if you love paranormal cozy mysteries because the writing is so well done that you will want to take your time and enjoy it from the start; this book will make much more sense if you do. In this book, our heroine learns more about herself, both her past and her paranormal abilities currently and what all that could possibly mean. We get more deeply involved with some of the lives of the other characters we've seen in other books, like Martin, and we learn much more about the place where the story happens. Of course, I loved Fortuna’s interactions with her paranormal cohorts, including her specter houseguest! This story is made richer by its context within the greater series. I am looking forward to the next installment to see what the heroine is going to experience next!

Fortuna is trying to learn about the book with Miss Bessie. It is only telling her one thing so far. She feels like she knows how to do what it is asking of her. She is frustrated that the others are not understanding why she is moving so slowly. She came to town for one reason but has yet to even do that. She feels like her choices were taken from her.
Gabe comes into the store to see Fortuna, she learned some information from Pepper. Martin and Jeeves comes in right after. There seems to be tension again between the two of them. Fortuna is not dating either, but Martine invites her to his house. He will cook her dinner. While there, there is tension between the two. Martin seems to always seem to be keeping secrets. While there Fortuna sees that an urn is not real. This turns into a real mystery.
Martin wants just the two of them to try to figure it out. Fortuna has Ollie and Pepper to help her with this mystery.

That is just the tip of the iceberg in this story. You will drawn into the web of secrets and lies. Fortuna will learn about Martin, the town and herself. There is so much going on in. There are some big reveals. I am not going into details, not spoiling it for anyone. I highly recommend reading this. I would really like Gabe and Fortuna together, think there is better chemistry between the two.

Hilarious Must Read!!! Even if Cozies or Mysteries not your thing. This is a definite must read just for the laughs.

The laughter was just what I needed at the time. Although I am not sure the author meant it to be so funny. I was almost kicked off the bus because I was laughing so much. Okay at least I was definitely get strange looks.

Lots of life lessons for everyone to take to heart (need to go back and copy them out to remember). This story we also get to learn more on Martin’s background. We know paranormal community, but we get identification of few more. What is up with Kane’s church? Will Fortuna learn her background? Love when Pepper gives it straight to her

Go Gideon Go!! Go Gideon Go!! Go Gideon Go!! Go Gideon Go!!

That is right. Hold your head up high!! High Praise indeed!!! You deserve it. I love the way you communicate with Fortuna. Just remember that you are wonderful and didn’t need that even though it is wonderful. I loved you from the first book. You go Gideon!!!

Curious. How many references to other things can you find like Stephen King movie(s)? I think I found at least three when I started counting.
Fun, easy to read and standalone book. However, go back and get caught up because it is definitely going to get more interesting now. Can’t wait for next one.

This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.

Whilst admiring Martin's art collection Fortuna notices something about one if his priceless objects, Martin (and the ever present Jeeves) beg Fortuna not to go to the police but to figure it out themselves Not sure Martin menant for her to include Pepper,Ollie and Gabe but if he wants Fortuna's help....
But something smells off about the whole thing and Fortuna wants to know what, but what wil it do to her budding romance with Martin?

Wow This book smacks you with a whole new set of secrets and explanations. For Fortuna it will affect relationships all over the board, who CAN she trust? Why does it seem like everyone wants something from her!

Leanne Leeds has a great ability to make you care for the characters, for me even the ones I don't like i care about I want to see what happens next. Each are fleshed out well and each have their own foibles no one person is 10% good, everyone has their faults.
Very well written abd a much beloved character I cannot wait for each book to publish!

ART OF SCRYING is the fourth installment in Leanne Leeds new series about Fortuna Delphi's new life in Mystic End. This is a fun series with character and world building making you feel right at home with these people.

The secrets of Mystic End just keep coming. Who to trust - who not to trust.  With all the secrets in this small town, it's hard to figure out. I really love this series

There are alot of secrets revealed in this installment. Just a few: Fortuna finds out her last name, may be more than just a made up name; Ms. Betsy reveals more information on Fortuna's powers; Martin reveals a few secrets of his own; And even Gideon gets some information making him a little giddy.

You'll be turning those pages as fast as you can trying to figure out all the secrets and piecing them together.

Fortuna's adventures in the semi-paranormal town of Mystic's End continue in this entertaining read. There is a lot to like about this book, some quirky and enjoyable characters, an involving story line, some light humour (a telepathic dog who loves to project visions of bacon to Fortuna) and even a bit of excitement.
In this book Fortuna discovers that there are more paranormals around than she thought, and that an ancient curse hangs over the town's witch population, living and dead. Her relationship with Martin also progresses as she learns more of his story, and a lot more about his driver/bodyguard. There is also the disappearance of an ancient urn which Martin persuades Fortuna to participate in.
I have deducted one star because there are too many questions asked, but not answered in this book, but will apparently be resolved in later books in the series.

Art of revelation..

When Martin finally invites Fortuna to his home she spots an antique urn, on closer look the piece appears to be a fake.. Martin offers to help her investigate the matter which opens up a new investigation for Pepper, Ollie and Gabe too.. Martin's intentions, which were to only investigate with Fortuna, have gone out the window and now she's looking a lot more closely at Jeeves.. how is it he seems to know everything, and she's never seen him sleep or eat..

When this merry group work out Jeeves true nature it throws Fortuna's slowly building trust for Martin a little off track again.. but when he reveals the secrets he's been hiding behind a door it's once again broken and she's not sure what to do..

She needs to learn to scry and although it's the title of the book she actually doesn't do it.. three down two dozen to go.. let's hope she has some success in the next book..

Fortuna Delphi and Miss Bessie are arguing that out of a hundred blank pages of parchment in the magical book, only one page has a message which is that Fortuna needs to learn to scry. But she already knows from her time as a fortune teller! This makes no sense to her.

When Martin and Jeeves come into the store, the two seem tense. Martin Salvi invites her to dinner at his mansion. Hesitant about accepting because he ghosted her previously, Fortuna reluctantly accepts. But she notices in his home that the ancient urn he is so proud of is a fake! Oddly, he doesn’t seem all that surprised or upset and instead wants just the two of them to unravel the mystery without the police. (But, of course, her friends get involved too!) What is he up to? Is the magical book trying to guide her to something?

Our heroine gets is pulled into another mystery by a man she doesn't completely trust. He definitely has ulterior motives, but what exactly are they?

This is book four of the series but it is written as a standalone. All the essential bits are explained pretty early on, so no worries starting here.

This is a cozy mystery with a touch of magic and a reluctant witch. The story is well written and easy to read with just the right amount of humor to keep things light. The characters are great and I enjoyed getting a see a bit more of them throughout the story. I really enjoy our heroine who is starting to grow. The mystery is also engaging and kept me entertained throughout the book. Overall, a very fun read and I look forward to reading more in the series.

Highly recommended.

I wanted to enjoy this series. I had high hopes. The author managed the "cozy conundrum" by going the Scooby gang route. Instead of the MC going out there getting involved with things that are none of her business and asserting that SHE and ONLY SHE must solve this mystery, the MC is surrounded by folks who have a legitimate reason to want to find the solution. Including a journalist/conspiracy theory blogger helps...journalists are genetically required to be sticking their noses into places they don't belong. But in the end, or at least halfway through book 5, I am giving up. The interpersonal drama is just getting too much. And if I have to listen to the MC whine once more about everyone hiding info from her when she is absolutely hiding info from them. People do not have to know every little thing about their friends or even significant others. Just. Too much. I'm done.

In the fourth book of MYSTYC'S END finally we find out more about Fortuna and her background, as she finally has that talk with Ms. Bessie. She also finds out more about Martin and his strange relationship with Jeeves - which leads to a whole new set of questions.
Having reached the middle of the book I could not put it out of my hands any more.
And although it is not really ending in a cliff-hanger, I feel really unhappy that it ends where it does.
As a warning, if you have not yet started the Mystic's End story - start at the beginning. The plot is too complicated to start here. you would miss too many clues.
A great read, and an absolute page-turner

Some answers but so many secrets!

Such a fun series! We get a lot of answers in this one but still so many questions. Everything is so intertwined in Mystic's End. Will Fortuna be able to unravel it all? What is Martin hiding, and what about Jeeves? Does the man ever sleep? So much going on in each one of these books it's hard to keep up with everyone! So many good characters and Gideon really steals the show! The series is just as much fun as the Magical Midway series and we get a little cross-over in this book.

Frustrating and disappointing

As a cozy read it has all the little love interests but there’s to much distrustful arguing and the main character is the one I wouldn’t trust. She expects everyone to be open and honest to her but she isn’t honest with them.
As I’ve read through four books I’ve watched her step back and away, make no effort to learn, discover, or grow. She’s been chastised by three of her friends for her lack of effort but doesn’t ponder it or take their words to heart.
There are three more issues becoming available and the overviews are not encouraging enough to make me want to continue reading this series.

I may have needed to read the previous story/stories to this one, I was a bit lost as to the references as to happened before.
So much self-doubt, angst, and overthinking, I don't think I can get into the main character; all the characters seem to be at the top level of what they portray - Ollie is just so laid back, Pepper is just so suspicious and alarmist, Martin is just so rich - and well these extremes are exhausting to read.
And there is absolutely no scrying happening.

Secrets, secrets, are no fun...
Things are heating up for Fortuna and her friends. She is starting to realize that ignoring things isn't going to work and sometimes, she has to take action. I love how this new series is expanding and developing. The characters are strong and the storyline is not just engaging. The reader is compelled to keep turning those pages to find out how it's all going to play out. Well written! I love it! Can't wait to find out what happens next!

Fortuna discovers Martin’s precious antique is actually a fake, but he is reluctant to contact police. He asks for her help to discover what happened, but Fortuna is suspicious of his motives. Although she is angry about the secrets Martin is keeping, she is conflicted about secrets she is keeping from Gabe. I especially enjoy Fortuna’s journey of self discovery from the time Leanne Leeds introduced her character.

I've been following this series from the beginning so I it's easy to join the dots, but

1. Where is the art of scrying?
2. Is there anything more cliched than some of the book?
3. Why is the ending so incomplete?

The 3 star rating is only because I understand the base of the series and it does fit in more or less but out of all the books in the series out now, this is the weakest link. Hopefully, the next one will be as good as the others.

Book 4

Martin built a mansion while the Greyhound race track and casino were also being built. Until now no one ever asked why, because he doesn't need the room or entertain. Fortuna is invited to the house for dinner, while there she notices a vase that Martin had bought for an extravagant sum of money isn't what he thought it was. She's out to find the burglar, with everyone's help!

Things Start to Get Real in Mystic's End
This episode of Mystics End teaches Fortuna Many new things including why she is really in Mystics End. There is an interesting mystery, but it is small potatoes compared to everything else we find out about the town and the townspeople. A mysterious urn. Fortuna and friends can't resist a mystery. Martin wants it to only be the two of them but everyone seems to have a thought. This is a quick read of mystery and witchy fun. There's got to be much more to come. Awaiting for the next book.
